Functions Of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the super star of all the vitamins. There is hardly anything that this wonder nutrient cannot do for your body. For starters it can make you live longer. Surveys after surveys have shown that those taking extra dose of this supplement tend to live longer by as much 7 years. Taking Vitamin C supplements regularly can protect you from myriad type of diseases starting from cancers, cataracts, heart diseases, brain degenerative diseases to many other serious health problems. This nutrient is needed for many vital functions in our body. Collagen is a tissue that holds the bones and joints together and intact. We need sufficient amount Vitamin C to make collagen. This is the reason why doctors advise large dosage of Vitamin C to those recovering from injuries, broken bones, joint disorders etc.

Vitamin C is also considered a one of the best antioxidants. Anti oxidants are those molecules which scavenge the free radicals. Free radicals are unstable ions formed in the body due to normal metabolic process or due to external factors like stress, pollution etc. These free radicals attack healthy cells and damage them. Free radical damage is associated with many diseases like cancer, brain degenerative diseases etc. Vitamin C mops up these free radicals there by preventing cellular damage.

Vitamin C is also a vital nutrient without which our body cannot assimilate other important nutrients like iron, folic acid etc. Vitamin C builds strong immunity against various diseases. Common cold, Allergies and asthma are a few typical immuno deficiency diseases. Vitamin C also helps lower blood pressure. This means that those taking large amount  of this wonder substance are protected from heart diseases and stroke to a considerable extent.

Vitamin C cannot be synthesised by the human body. It always has to come from an external source. While the daily recommended dosage is around 60 mg per day. This is dosage is required for normal functioning. In fact 10 mg per day is sufficient to prevent scurvy. But doctors recommend a typical daily dosage of 200 mg per day and even much beyond to prevent major diseases. Vitamin C is water soluble so any excess dosage not assimilated by the body will be flushed out.
