Vitamin C deficiency linked to obesity
Long before I ever dreamed of becoming a registered dietitian,
I saw my first case of nutritional deficiency. My pet guinea pig died of
scurvy -- a fatal disease caused by a lack of vitamin C. I never saw his
receding gums, joint pain, neuropathy (nerve pain) or swollen, discolored
"black legs." I only saw (too late) his lack of energy and vigor before
he died.Over the years, I have known of just one human case of scurvy --
a man who ate only canned and packaged...

Vitamin C May Have A Downside
Washington-Vitamin C, an essential nutrient found in fruits
and vegetables and taken by many people as a dietary supplement, is a double-edged
sword, which in laboratory experiments induces the production of compounds
associated with cancer, researchers said yesterday. Researchers at the
University of Pennsylvania added vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid,
to solutions of a degraded version of an important fatty acid found in
blood, and found it triggered production of DNA-damaging agents...

LARGE DAILY DOSES OF VITAMIN C MAY LENGTHEN LIVES, STUDY HINTS
LOS ANGELES -- Men who consume a few hundred milligrams of vitamin
C every day appear to live about six years longer than men who do not,
and the vitamin may extend women's lives by about one year, a study suggests.
The US government's recommended daily allowance of vitamin C for most adults
is 60 milligrams, the equivalent of three cups of orange juice. But the
study indicates that consuming 300 to 400 milligrams daily might help people
live longer, said its author,...

Vitamin C has place in the sun Skin lotion developed at Duke may help
protect fans of tan
Prudent sunbathers soon may start packing a tube of vitamin
C in their beach bags along with their sunscreen, towels and shades.Researchers
at Duke University Medical Center have found that a lotion made from vitamin
C helps prevent sun-baked skin from wrinkling and may someday prove to
protect against skin cancer as well. Preliminary tests show that the lotion
stays in the skin for three days or more, protecting it from a chemical
reaction that occurs when sunlight hits bare flesh....

RX, DAILY DOSE OF VITAMIN C MAY HELP HEART-SURGERY PATIENTS
People who take vitamin C after undergoing surgery to open up
heart arteries may prevent the arteries from reclogging.Reclogging of heart
arteries, or restenosis, after the surgery is a significant problem for
many people with heart disease, and vitamin C may be a harmless and inexpensive
way to prevent this condition, researchers led by Dr. Haruo Tomoda of the
department of cardiology at Tokai University in Kanagawa, Japan, reported

Review gives vitamin C the cold shoulder
A new review of 65 years of research on colds and vitamin C
concludes there's little evidence that 200 milligrams or more a day wards
off or shortens the duration of the common cold - with the possible exception
of people exposed to extreme cold or physical stress. The review's authors,
Robert Douglas of the Australian National University and Harri Hemila of
the University of Helsinki, Finland, wrote that the "lack of effect of
(preventive) vitamin C...

Two studies offer smokers healthy advice Vitamin C and seafood might
protect cigarette smokers from coronary artery and lung diseases.
A study of vitamin-popping hamsters suggests that vitamin C
supplements may help prevent coronary artery disease in smokers, a finding
that is sure to escalate the ever-widening dispute over the potential health
benefits of vitamins. Two large studies in the past four months have undercut
the argument that vitamin supplements can help prevent cancer. But at least
one large human study has concluded that vitamin E supplements can lower
people's risk of cardiovascular disease.To...

Vitamin C shown to delay cataracts
According to recent reports in The Washington Post, a team of
Boston researchers has discovered that older women who took vitamin C supplements
for at least 10 years were less likely to get cataracts. Cataracts are
a common part of aging. Scientists say that nearly half of adults aged
65 and older have one. They are created when proteins clump together and
cloud the lens of the eye. As cataracts grow, they blur vision and interfere
with night vision. Exposure to sunlight and to...
