VITAMIN C MAY HURT TREATMENTS FOR CANCER
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Cancer patients who take large doses of
vitamin C might make their disease worse by inadvertently protecting their
tumors from radiation and chemotherapy, new research suggests.Doctors said
they cannot prove the vitamin is harmful during cancer treatment, but added
that there are strong biological reasons to think megadoses could be bad.
The concern is based on the discovery that cancer cells actually contain
large amounts of vitamin C, which appears to protect them...

Debating vitamin megadoses Pauling sees supplements as key to healthy
life
Linus Pauling has ordered bacon, eggs and biscuits for breakfast,
but has skipped the orange juice. The apostle of vitamin C already has eaten
an orange in his hotel room, after waking up at 4 a.m. to ponder a chemistry
problem. Pauling is convinced the vitamin C in that orange will help prevent
just about every ill, from colds to cancer. But he would have to drink
200 glasses of orange juice to get his daily fix. So he obtains most of
his vitamin C from a powder supplement. That explains...

Lots of vitamin C good for preventing illness
Megadoses of vitamin C reduced rats' normal response to stress,
and that apparently is why they can prevent illness, an Alabama researcher
told the American Chemical Society. Health agencies should think about
increasing the recommended dose of the vitamin, which is based on the amount
needed to prevent scurvy and anemia, said P. Samuel Campbell, chairman
of the biological sciences department at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. His
speech Sunday was, coincidentally, five...

role of the antioxidants: beta carotene (the parent of vitamin A), vitamin
C and vitamin E. These powerhouse nutrients appear to neutralize molecules
called oxygen-free radicals, prime suspects in promoting cancer, heart
disease and aging.But many...

WAY FOUND TO INCREASE VITAMIN C IN BRAIN
Researchers said yesterday they have found a way to sneak vitamin
C past the so-called blood-brain barrier, the gatekeeper that protects
the brain from infection. If the method they have tested on mice also works
in people, it could offer a new approach to treating Alzheimer's disease
and other diseases that come from damage to brain cells, they said. That
is because vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, working to prevent the
damage caused by everyday life -- damage that leads...
