Studies say antioxidant vitamins may protect lungs
Two new studies published by the American Lung Association add
to evidence that the antioxidant vitamins C and E may have a beneficial
effect on the lungs. In the first study, researchers found that increased
consumption of vitamin C was associated with better lung function, leading
them to suggest that antioxidant vitamins may have a role in protecting
against the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (such
as emphysema and chronic bronchitis). The second study suggests that...

VITAMINS: 13 KEY SUBSTANCES THEIR DISCOVERY HELPED TREAT SCURVY, RICKETS
AND BERIBERI
The latest controversy over vitamins, in which a large clinical
study failed to provide evidence that C, E and beta carotene helped to
prevent colon cancer, could not have happened as early as the turn of this
century. In fact, the word vitamin wasn't coined until 1912 Vitamins were
viewed not as agents to combat a wide spectrum of health problems but as
chemical compounds that the body needed in small amounts. To be sure, laymen
and medical officials in early times learned to...

LINUS PAULING, 93, TWO-TIME WINNER OF NOBEL PRIZE; VITAMIN C ADVOCATE
BIG SUR, Calif. -- Two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling,
whose advocacy of large doses of vitamin C to stave off diseases was popular
with the public but drew skepticism from fellow scientists, died Friday
in his ranch at Big Sur. He was 93. Mr. Pauling was the only winner of
two unshared Nobel Prizes. He won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1954
for his research on the nature of the chemical bond holding molecules together
and its use in understanding the structure of complex substances...

Vitamin C under study as shield against cancer
If the public would take 10 grams of vitamin C a day, only a
quarter as many people would die of cancer at a given age. It's a sweeping
statement, but one that Nobel laureate Linus Pauling has been making since
his vitamin C for colds theory evolved into an all-out weapon against many
illnesses. Unlike most other scientists who shun public life, Pauling takes
his theory to the public _ that group of people who would benefit most
by accepting his simple, admittedly controversial...

SCIENTISTS SET LIMITS FOR VITAMINS C, E
You can get too much of some good things, including vitamins
C and E, the federal government's watchdog for nutritional standards said
Monday. For the first time, the Institute of Medicine, part of the National
Academy of Sciences, set limits on daily consumption of vitamins C and

VITAMIN C MAY HAVE ANTI-CATARACT EFFECT
Older women in a study who took vitamin C supplements for at
least 10 years were less likely to get cataracts, according to a team of
Boston researchers. Cataracts are a common part of aging; nearly half of
adults aged 65 and older have one. They are created when proteins clump
together and cloud the lens of the eye. As cataracts grow, they blur vision
and interfere with night vision. Exposure to sunlight and to oxidants such
as cigarette smoke seems to accelerate their formation, and people...
